Volunteership at Baby Sarah Home in Westindia

About the Project:

Dustin will be placed Baby Sarah’s Special School. Baby Sarah’s Home (BSH) is a Unit of Integrated Rehabilitation & Development Centre (IRDC), residential special school and rehabilitation center. BSH is the only center for Orphaned mentally retarded children in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

BSH provides care, education and Vocational Training to around 50 Mentally Challenged Children.
The children are being educated in Social and basic life skills. The mild and moderate mentally challenged children are provided with skill development training in arts and crafts. They take part in the drawing competitions, they even represented in the Union Territory in the Special Olympics for the disabled. These children are being taught by special educators: specially trained teachers. Play materials, teaching and learning materials are provided to them to enhance their learning ability. These children need teachers who can teach term the basic daily activities skills through play and participation.

Volunteers will be involved in the Special School where they will be assisting our special Educators, social Workers, speech Therapist, Physiotherapist and Vocational Instructor to enable each and every Disabled to learn the activities of daily living and also in Play activities and Gardening.

The activities proposed to each volunteer are described in the info pack provided by the hosting organization but can be revised upon volunteer’s arrival.  All accommodation for the volunteer is covered including his food, shelter and transportation.
