Have you ever had the opportunity to be spend time serving on the other side of the world – and better yet, worked for a company that supports you doing so? I have – and this is my story.

This past March, I was able to take part on a mission trip with my local church here in Raleigh – Hope Community Church. My group of 8 departed from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and ventured across the world to the small town of Kesinga, India. In this small town of Eastern India is a place called New Life Ministries. New Life is home to orphans, an academy, and one of the only Christian churches in the entire state of Orissa. It is a place filled with love, hope, and community, and I was fortunate enough to spend 10 days surrounded by wonderful people in a place overflowing with God’s grace.

On this trip we were able to give back by putting on a 3-day bible camp for students and village children, be a part of daily school activities, play games, and even par-take in a volleyball tournament (which we lost miserably… who knew that they are volleyball rock stars in India?!). We went through local villages, markets, and spent every waking hour surrounded by beautiful children who live and love New Life for all that the ministry has done in their lives.

I could go on and on, but the main reason that I am writing today is to share about this passion of mine – serving. I love to be a part of something bigger than I am, and my church here in Raleigh has provided me many opportunities to get involved and reach my community, as well as communities across the world. Serving others is invaluable. The outcomes are tremendous, and I love to hear and see stories of those around me who also have been a part of some amazing serving opportunities. I am lucky enough to work for a company that also supports my passion, and furthermore, encourages others to find a passion for an organization or group that they can serve and become invested in.

CISCO has started the „Time2Give“ initiative. Time2Give is an offering that encourages your passion for community service. All full-time Cisco employees can take up to 5 days per calendar year, with pay, to give time to a cause that matters most to them. Giving back is an integral part of the People Deal at Cisco, as well as Cisco’s culture, and Time2Give makes it even easier to contribute time and talent to make a difference in communities and around the world.

I am very thankful to work for a company that supports my passion, encourages me to go and serve, and allows all employees to do the same. It is something that I will always seek to do, have a passion for, and will be invested in because through my missions I have developed myself significantly and seen the world in a different perspective. What a difference it would make if every company gave employees the opportunity away from their day-to-day jobs to go and serve…

Miss Getty und Frauenrechte in Indien

Since April 14, Miss Getty, a lawyer from the Netherlands, works as a legal volunteer at REAL organization, a Non-Profit-Organization based in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, India promoting women’s rights.

‘How successful are we, Miss Getty? That is what we like you to find out for us’, told Mr. Lawrence this morning, when I was attending Getty’s first day at work in the office.

“INDIA has elaborate laws to protect the rights of women, including the Prevention of Immoral Traffic, the Sati (widow burning) Act, and the Dowry Prevention Act. Women and children have figured prominently in the government’s agenda of social reforms and initiatives. However the Government is often unable to enforce these laws, especially in rural areas where traditions are deeply rooted. Dowry, Female bondage and forced prostitution are widespread in some parts of India”

‚Miss Getty has to find out where REAL can still improve the gap between the effective awareness of women’s rights and the lack of it’, as Mr. Lawrence put it.

Many obstacles to the realization of women’s human rights in India, are social and cultural in nature, deeply rooted in the traditions of its communities.

About the Project:

Dustin will be placed Baby Sarah’s Special School. Baby Sarah’s Home (BSH) is a Unit of Integrated Rehabilitation & Development Centre (IRDC), residential special school and rehabilitation center. BSH is the only center for Orphaned mentally retarded children in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

BSH provides care, education and Vocational Training to around 50 Mentally Challenged Children. The children are being educated in Social and basic life skills. The mild and moderate mentally challenged children are provided with skill development training in arts and crafts. They take part in the drawing competitions, they even represented in the Union Territory in the Special Olympics for the disabled. These children are being taught by special educators: specially trained teachers. Play materials, teaching and learning materials are provided to them to enhance their learning ability. These children need teachers who can teach term the basic daily activities skills through play and participation.

Volunteers will be involved in the Special School where they will be assisting our special Educators, social Workers, speech Therapist, Physiotherapist and Vocational Instructor to enable each and every Disabled to learn the activities of daily living and also in Play activities and Gardening.

The activities proposed to each volunteer are described in the info pack provided by the hosting organization but can be revised upon volunteer’s arrival. All accommodation for the volunteer is covered including his food, shelter and transportation.

Dr. Sugathan about Sanne, volunteer at SADAY

Ms. Sanne Verkooijen, Psychology Graduate from the Netherlands came to our SADAY-School for special needs as a volunteer from Amaidi on 3rd November 2009.

I met her for the first time on 27th November Friday. First interaction itself was interesting. Because of her attractive personality she could easily win the hearts of staff and children. In consultation with me and special educator she started working with the children and created programs for different level children. She helped our staff in handling computers and guided teachers in using computer aided teaching.

During her presence in SADAY we had organized a project along with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for 4 days ie, December 5, 6,7 and 8 2009. On 5th December we had a seminar for regular school children, teachers and siblings of special children. She helped in handling LCD Projector and did mastering the ceremony. On 6th December regular school students , special children, parent, staff and siblings of special children spent about 2 and a half hours in the Bharathi park. On that day she introduced group games and was a main attraction.On 7th Dec. we had a seminar for parents and staff of special school. On that day also she helped us in handling LCD Projector and did anchoring. On 8th Dec. SADAY organized a mega rally on Pondicherry Beach Road in the evening which was attended by VIP’s, Media , Public, Parents, Siblings, regular school children, teachers and a whole lot of special children. She along with her friends participated in the rally and on one occasion she was dancing by carrying a small special child. It was wonderful to see and public got thrilled by seeing this.

Each and every volunteers promoted by Amaidi is unique and each one of them are making their own impact (Positive energy) among special children and staff. Once in while they may come across stomach upset,otherwise all of them sincerely helped our special children and staff and made them happy. We will be always thankful to Amadi for helping SADAY to have volunteers of different specialization and wish to contain our sincere gratitude to Mr. Camile and his organization. We expect more and more volunteers and there is enough room and scope for them at SADAY. Ms. Sanne left us on 18^th Dec. 2009 and parting was a sorrow.

Mother Theresa Hospice Puducherry cares for the destitute

In Reddiyarpalayam, just outside the main town of Puducherry on the way to Villupuram, lies Mother Theresa Hospice, run by the Missionaries of Charity.

Inge Renckens, AMAIDI volunteer already done with her project at partner NGO ‘REAL’ in the same town, has decided to help the dying and destitute in Mother Theresa’s Hospice in Puducherry for the remainder of her stay in this part of India, another 3 weeks.

A not less than courageous undertaking, because the atmosphere at MTH is not particularly uplifting: old women shuffle around, sounds are produced but not much is spoken, feeding is a challenge as is bathing and being bathed. And amidst them all are the ones that are dying, waiting for the end to come, lying on their beds all day, not able to move or speak.

I have great admiration for Inge who has taken up this task as a non-professional in this area (being a Bacholeor in Finance and Accounting originally). All of us at AMAIDI are wishing her all best of luck in her work and the needed inspiration.

Durk Haringsma, an Agricultural student as a trainee on a dairy farm project

Vannakam!

My name is Durk Haringsma, I am an Agricultural student, studying dairy farming at Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein (http://www.vanhall-larenstein.nl) in the Netherlands. I have been working as a trainee on a dairy farm project for AMAIDI’s partner organization AID India. I made a report for establishing a dairy farm in Sathankulam. AID India hasn’t got a source of income at the moment which makes the organization dependent on funds, foundations and donations. That’s why AID India wants to start a dairy farm on their land to gain some profit. I have assessed the needs, costs and I have also made a management plan for running the dairy farm. When we have engaged the needed funds, AID India can start the project. Working for an NGO in India is a great experience and I have learned a lot during my stay in Sathankulam. I have not only learned about a totally different way of dairy farming, but I also got involved in Human Rights and Micro Credit Programmes and I have experienced much of the Indian culture. I think my internship was a 2 way process, in which both AID India and me gained profit. The hospitality of the AID India team is great and it was a great pleasure to work with them. The 19 weeks I worked there passed on in no time, and I feel sad that I have to leave them after this great time. I want to thank AMAIDI for bringing me in contact with this organization, the great guidance and the pleasant stay in their guesthouse and home stay.

For those seeking an authentic India living experience, the AMAIDI village house is it

The house is the basic one room cement block (w/ alcove) where many villagers live with their entire families. The difference is you have the whole place to yourself until about 6:30 AM when Jessy, the tenant, comes home to prepare breakfast and lunch for the children.

Lucky you, no alarm clock needed. The reason you have the whole place at night is that, as most of you know, Indian families sleep with their extended families in rooms just like this one, and Jessy is Camille’s sister in law and sleeps at Camille’s house. So you are literally trading places with her when you access the guest house facilities during the day –very efficient!! One disadvantage, NO TOILET, although for a guy, it can be quite advantageous as you can really become one with nature. Actually, as mentioned, you have access to the guest house which is literally across the street, so no problem.

Anything else?? Yes, you may have little visitor friends at night. But then again, it becomes hard to tell what is happening inside verses outside the house. However you are pretty well cordoned off in a little alcove, so again, no problem.

My little friends and I came to a mutual understanding -I would pretend that they were outside, and they would pretend I was sleeping. No, all kidding aside, it is a truly authentic and fun experience. If you are working with villagers or children of the village, than it kind of makes sense to live in the village and this is a safe entree into village life. Am I enjoying it? Absolutely, I’m having the time of my life and learning how little I actually need to be happy.
